This year I am very pleased to have both my altered art and poetry on offer at Harbor Artisans in Southwest Harbor and at Belfast Harbor Artisans in Belfast.  This will be my fourth season working on my altered art here in gorgeous Maine.

 

   Welcome to Luna Sea Altered Arts

   I’ve been working with altered books since 2005. If you aren’t familiar with them they are the transformation of old books into unique, one of a kind art objects using varied techniques, including collage, stamping, painting, sewing, weaving, jewelry making, ribbons, string, hardware, ephemera and other mixed media in the process.

Each book is a journey unto itself.

   I’ve been writing poetry for almost fifty years and have based many of my altered books on my poetry, weaving the words, pictures and conjured emotion into a new creation. I love poetry for the musical spill of the words like water over time-worn stones. Meshing the lyrical quality of poetry with the visual wash of color and imagery is a joy both to create and to experience.

In both my poetry and altered art my most common themes are love in all its forms, nature, one of my greatest inspirations and the Sea, my power place. I grew up very near the ocean and spent many of my growing up years as well as adult ones close to the rise and fall of waves and tides, gull caw and siren song.

Beach Art

The waves ran high today
For here.
Sibilant surf song raging
Ripe with frenzied foam,
Pounding.
Waves relentlessly
Washing away
My sand scripted poetry-
Just a name.

So…
Steal what I have written!
Draw it back sea bound
Suck it down and in
Toss it
Windward on dolphins plumed spray.
Mist of life.

Lying on the night damp sand
Fragments of yesterdays
Shells and dreams
Molded to my flesh
A mosaic
Of hips and coquina
Of sand and beach glass.
Eyes closed to the
Wash of sun spilled heat and light.
Lips, tongue lashed
To taste what clings so close.

Breath of life
Salt of my earth
The sea calms
Gently swells
Heaving
Like the rise and fall
Of my life.

I’ll be posting some new books here soon and will have them and my poetry book Adrift In the Holy available at Belfast Harbor Artisans in Belfast, Maine,  Harbor Artisans in Southwest Harbor, Maine and Maine Artisans Co-operative Art Gallery in Lincolnville, Maine beginning this Spring season.
